Ramas: de la Bahia a la Isla or Branches: from the Bay to the Island

In Puerto Rico, the Ceiba Tree with roots that run deep through the earth and branches that stretch to the heavens represents the link between the human world and world of the ancestors and gods. The ancestors and gods were believed to take care of the people. In turn, the people were expected to give back to humanity in the way of service. This summer, 14 Oakland Leaf youth reached up to branch out to Puerto Rico.

“Ramas: de la Bahia a la Isla” or “Branches: from the Bay to the Island” is a socio-cultural exploration for teenagers to get first hand experience in learning about how the people of Puerto Rico have struggled as a U.S. colony. Participating youth came from various Oakland Leaf programs, such as Youth Roots, Ascend Sunset Warriors, Urban Arts/Project Phoenix and the Oakland Peace Camp.

In Puerto Rico, the youth explored issues of Colonization, Education, Society, and Culture, documenting their immersion in video, audio and photography media. The products the youth created will contribute to the dissemination of counter-narratives to promote awareness to our community here in Oakland as well as maintain the roots that we plant from our branching out to Puerto Rico.

Help us raise the $30,000 necessary to make this trip possible for our youth. Go to our Support page to learn more about donating.

"Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow. Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest and the playtime"W.E.B. DuBois
