Through the inspiration and experience of Frederick Douglass Mesa, the Urban Arts (UA) program director, UA has made significant improvements in both arts enrichment and academic intervention. The arts enrichment program offers a range of age appropriate and culturally relevant options including: indigenous arts, hip-hop arts, kickboxing, video production, and athletics. In Project Phoenix, a team of Urban Promise Academy teachers and academic mentors provide targeted academic services to the school's most struggling students. Thanks to a grant from the United Way of the Bay Area, Oakland Leaf has added a new talented community member, Ms. Glendy Cordero. As our community organizer at UPA, she provides a vital bridge between our programs and the youth’s families. We welcome her with deep appreciation and vision for her impact on the program and school community.
